Road Safety

Driving Change: Road Safety Efforts in FIA Region III

Over 1.19 million people are killed each year on the roads worldwide and 50 million injured. This is an unacceptable human, economic and social cost for our societies.

From busy highways in North America to narrow urban streets in the Caribbean, the need for safer mobility is urgent and growing. That’s where FIA Region III steps in.

FIA Region III brings together automobile clubs with one shared mission: to make roads safer for everyone. Guided by the principles of the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), the region focuses on education, advocacy, and innovation to reduce fatalities and injuries on the road.

A Regional Commitment to Safer Roads

Road safety isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution. With such a diverse geography, Region III faces a wide range of challenges—from high motorcycle crash rates to distracted driving in urban cities. But the clubs of Region III respond with locally tailored strategies backed by global expertise.

Whether its promoting helmet use in Jamaica to launching distracted driving campaigns in Canada to hosting road safety conferences in Mexico, these clubs are uniquely positioned to reach communities, influence policy, and shift driver behavior.

Key Projects Making an Impact

🛵 Protecting Vulnerable Road Users

Motorcyclists and pedestrians are among the most at-risk groups on the road. To protect them, Region III clubs have launched campaigns distributing certified helmets, educating two-wheeler users, and improving pedestrian crossings near schools and markets.

🚸 Safe School Zones

The FIA School Assessment Toolkit is helping clubs evaluate the safety of school environments. Using this tool, local teams identify hazards around school zones and advocate for infrastructure changes—such as lower speed limits, clearer signage, and safer crossings.

🛣️ Policy and Infrastructure Advocacy

Working with governments and decision makers, Region III supports efforts to reform traffic laws and design roads that are forgiving of human error – following the Safe Systems Approach.

Results That Matter

Thanks to the combined efforts of our clubs, FIA Region III has seen:

  • A measurable increase in helmet usage in high-risk areas
  • Safer road conditions around hundreds of schools
  • National campaigns reaching millions of drivers
  • Contributions to policy changes and better enforcement mechanisms

The numbers tell a compelling story—but the real victories are the lives saved, the injuries prevented, and the communities empowered.

A Call to Action

Road safety is everyone’s responsibility. As Region III continues its mission, it invites drivers, decision-makers, and communities to be part of the solution. Whether by buckling up, slowing down, or supporting your local FIA club, you can help build a safer future.

Because when roads are safer, communities thrive.
