The Belize Automobile Touring Association (BATA), a member of FIA Region III, has been working closely with the FIA Foundation and the Ministry of Transport to strengthen policy, enforcement, and everyday behaviours around helmet use in Belize. Their goal is not only to highlight the existence of helmet regulations, but also to address how they are applied, and often overlooked, in practice.

Belize continues to face a significant gap between legislation and enforcement. Compliance remains inconsistent, influenced by factors such as limited enforcement capacity, cultural attitudes toward safety, and economic constraints. Recognizing this challenge, Belize introduced its first helmet standard in 2026, an important step toward improving both compliance and safety outcomes.

To support this effort, BATA and the Ministry of Transport are partnering to train enforcement officers from the Police and Traffic Departments. These trainings will ensure officers are well-informed about the new legislation and equipped with the practical skills needed to effectively implement and enforce the updated laws.

In addition, BATA is collaborating with key stakeholders, including the Customs Department, motorcycle clubs, and Youth 501 Advocates for Road Safety, to ensure that only certified, high-quality helmets are imported and distributed within the country. This is critical, as a properly fitted, good-quality helmet can reduce the risk of death by up to six times and the risk of serious head injury by more than 73%.
